The repair café
Our class wanted to reduce the number of broken objects that people threw away. We decided to hold a repair café, where neighbours could bring small things to be fixed. [1] We needed somewhere with enough tables, power sockets and room for visitors.
The community centre agreed to lend us its hall for a Saturday. Next, we made a list of what we could repair safely, such as torn bags and loose bicycle bells. None of us had the skills to repair electrical equipment. [2] They agreed to deal with the jobs that required special training.
A week before the event, we put posters around the neighbourhood. The posters asked visitors to describe their broken objects when they booked. [3] For example, we bought several kinds of thread after learning that people planned to bring clothes.
On the morning of the café, the first visitor arrived with an old wooden toy. He explained that his grandfather had made it. At first, the broken wheel looked impossible to replace. [4] With a little shaping, it fitted perfectly, and the visitor was delighted.
By lunchtime, every table was busy. We could not fix everything, but we showed people where they could get further help. The event also changed the way I looked at damaged things. [5] Now I ask whether someone could repair an object before I decide to replace it.
